Regular readers may remember a rumour that was doing the rounds back in May. The word on the street was that Hangar 13 — the developer behind the Mafia series — was working on a new instalment. Fast forward a few months and here we are, with publisher 2K officially confirming that the next Mafia game is in the works.
It's early days, though. "It's a few years away and we can't share anything more right now," Hangar 13 general manager Roman Hladík clarifies. "We're really excited to keep working on this beloved franchise and to entertain our players with new stories."
As you may recall, the studio has suffered a fairly large number of layoffs over the last year or so, which led to a lot of people questioning whether there would even be another Mafia title. But the fact that development has now been made public suggests that things have smoothed out.
It would be interesting to know what the premise for this project is, because the aforementioned rumour said that it may well be a prequel to the existing Mafia trilogy. That would mean a pre-1930s setting.

Hooray! Really loved the remake of Mafia 1 and it received the highly coveted Mum stamp of approval along with Mafia 2 (not 3 though) so well up for another one, especially if it’s a prequel.
If it would be a prequel to 1st game than that would be dope......
I just want Vegas setting like casino
Oh wow... that is great news! Day 1
Mafia 1 or 2 (cant remember) had this amazing Mega-advert in the city. They took the entire side of a building on 36th street and had one top window with 2 men silo and an image of someone falling 2 stories down - and a big "MAFIA" mid way.
Love when the gaming industry show they can play with the TV/Movie studios even in Marketing - Wish I had taken a picture at the time.
The leaks I've been reading says it set in late 1890's Sicily. Talk about a literal spaghetti western.
@PenguinLtd
Aside from Boardwalk Empire, which was an awesome show; the Prohibition era of American organized crime is such a criminally underexplored time period.
Would be really cool if you could customize your character with some bright green jacket, pink trousers, pigs head etc....
I'm a bit late to the party on this series but I loved the remake of the original and really enjoyed 2 as well. 3 was definitely a misstep as I couldn't get through the open world shenanigans that one had but if this is more like the 1st 2 count me in!
New Mafia, yes please. By Hangar 13 though, no thanks.
I hope it's set in Space and has dinosaurs.
Hopefully it resembles Mafia 1 Remake. That game and story was fantastic
They should add rocket launchers and skateboarding. Boom! Pew! Hahaha!

Mafia 1 was an immersive experience. It had deep running gameplay systems. Mafia 2 was also as immersive, the world felt real and reacted accordingly. Then along came these guys with 3 & the remake, which were just action games with a dumb world. No immersion.
I fear that Hangar 13 are going to continue in that fashion. I feel like most people appreciate those little intricacies in games. That's why people love R*. Hangar 13's Mafia games have been missing this, can only hope they come through.
I adore Mafia 1 and 2. I have yet to play through 3. For well known reasons I never completed it although the world and story were really intriguing.
I wish we would have gotten that sci-fi game they were working on, but ill take another Mafia game. I love that series.
Oh that's awesome news!
I honestly thought no new mafia game would ever come out again.
Yeah I'd be up for this, it could be really good
Looking forward to starting my 2nd runs of 1 & 2. As for 3 I've beat it 2 or 3 times already. They're all enjoyable but I think 2 takes the crown.
@theMEGAniggle Not like they've been missing the intricacies R* effortlessly delivers, maybe they just can't do it. A lot of devs can't get mirrors to work in games. They can't get you to press a button to look behind instantly like R*'s R3. Big devs like Ubisoft can't make a mini map on the screen that shows your movement and position on the map instantaneously. A lot of devs can't get GPS right, something's that's available since GTA3.
I really enjoyed the Mafia Remake. This is some of the best game news I’ve heard in a while.
These games are such guilty pleasures for me. Little janky, little meh in the open world department but their stories were pretty great. 3’s implementation of systemic 60s racism into its gameplay was an interesting display of games as social commentary, even if it didn’t amount to too much.
@TheArt exactly! There are things that were available in Mafia 1 & 2 that just simply don't exist in Hangar 13's Mafia games. Its really not key but having liked the Mafia franchise for those first two games and then having these Hangar 13 ones, its really disappointing.
Hoping that they've learned a few more tricks or hired well for this.
Please avoid making the gameplay flow like Mafia 3. It was an interesting world with lots of character but the sheer repetition of the tasks you needed to complete to finish it was mind numbing after a while.
N.i.c.e. i enjoy the mafia games.so im excited for a new one word up son
Mafia 3 was a good game story wise, but the way gameplay mechanics worked with progression to the missions was really grindy...
loved mafia 1 remake, was really well done....then fired up mafia 2 remake and OMG....what a steaming pile of.....!!!!
played it for 10 mins before deleting, surprised at a few of the comments here saying mafia 2 is so good, maybe when originally released as the remake is awful
All 3 Mafia games are fantastic. This is excellent news
@slayernz 2 is a remaster and not a remake and yeah it's really good, you didn't give it a chance. The story's great and there's immersive elements like your car staying damaged, fixing it up at a mod shop, changing up the plates or changing clothes to evade police, going to diners to eat, buying clothes etc.
The mafia remake was supposed to be getting more post launch content but they abandoned that
Finally. I enjoyed Mafia 1 & 2, although the games gave you little reason to explore they city outside of missions.
I loved Mafia 3. It was a great game with an amazing soundtrack.
The last one had a great story and protagonist.
I would like to see something new, like the Russian mafia for example Either way, I hope it turns out good.
I feel like I played the Mafia 1 remake but can't remember what happened now. I swear I finished it, but maybe I didn't. And I barely even started 3 despite loving the premise I suck at gaming 😅
I'll echo others though, a prohibition era game would be a big yes from me. Or anything with a bit of a similar flavour to the City Blues quartet of novels by Ray Celestin to be honest. That would get me really excited. A mix of mafia drama and underworld investigation elements would make for a really nice game over the usual crime stuff.
Now everyone go read 'The Axeman's Jazz' 💀
The original started during prohibition (1930), but it would be great to see what happened between Sallieri and Morello before then (you see a photo at some point during when they were best mates, so a few missions before some great falling out, followed by all out war until somehow the city is divided up, part way though all of that you get the start of prohibition). The only issue with that idea is that you already know how it ends.
@theheadofabroom You knew how it all ended in Red Dead Redemption 2 but it was still great!
If its Hangar 13 it can get to f
@TheArt first thing i noticed was the music being so loud i could barely hear any of the opening speech so no idea whats going on and no way to go into options to turn subtitles on until after the cutscene finished....then the frame rate being woeful (playing on PS5 as well....) graphics being very average and then the cover system was absolutely horrible....sorry but couldnt play through that no matter how good the story might be...20 minutes wasted on that was more than enough
shame as i thought mafia 1 was really really good, thoroughly enjoyed it
@Kairu maybe they want to hire people? Or they're outsourcing something and expect it to leak anyways, and this way they control the news?
I'm still stuck on Mafia 1 Remake, but was enjoying the game until I had to drive that racecar with "realistic controls".
I kept dying/being unable to steer properly.
